Title:
Optimising LEO Satellite Communications for 5G/6G Integration
Abstract:
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems are poised to be integral components of 5G-Advanced and 6G networks, serving as critical elements of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) to complement terrestrial infrastructure. These systems aim to deliver continuous, ubiquitous, and scalable connectivity. Recent advancements by operators such as SpaceX's Starlink and AST SpaceMobile have demonstrated the feasibility of direct-to-device services using LEO constellations. Nevertheless, challenges such as high satellite mobility and extended propagation distances to terrestrial users impose constraints on achievable data rates. To address these limitations, we focus on optimizing communication in integrated satellite-terrestrial networks through advanced spectrum sharing, beamformer design, and interference coordination strategies. We propose a comprehensive system model that integrates NTNs with 5G-Advanced and 6G frameworks, employing two primary optimization approaches: joint optimization and auxiliary optimization. These approaches utilize theoretical methodologies, including convex optimization and deep reinforcement learning, alongside techniques such as adaptive beamforming, to enhance spectral efficiency, mitigate interference, and maximize system throughput in diverse integrated network scenarios.
